Does Your Life Include a RIPE Plan?Planning Tips for Retirement, Investing, Protection, and Estate Planning Part 1 (Retirement) by: Janet L. Hall
No matter what your age or years of work, itˇs almost never too late to start planning for your retirement. As a matter of fact, the younger you are, the less chance you will have of becoming destitute, or a * bag * person. Iˇm not trying to be funny, it can happen to you if you donˇt watch what you are doing and PLAN for the future.
Ponder for a minute on the questions below:
~~ What kind of life do you want in your * golden years *? ~~ How will you use your retirement time, meaning, what activities, interests, or travel might you want to pursue? ~~ Will you need or want to change your housing and lifestyle completely or do you hope you can * stay where you are, doing the same things youˇve always done *? ~~ If you are planning on living in a different area, what are the standards of living in that area OR what are the chances of the standard of living increasing or decreasing where you are currently living? ~~ How might your health affect your retirement? ~~ Will you need to continue to work part-time after retirement to * make ends meet *? How will that affect your benefits? ~~ Do you want to start your own business, many people do after retirement, and how will that affect your benefits? ~~ What * support * systems do you have or need to have in place?
If a company employs you, you need to FIND OUT:
~~ if they have a retirement plan (benefits), such as a pension or 401(k) ~~ what your TOTAL monthly or lump sum disbursement will be ~~ how much you can contribute ~~ length of service required to be eligible to collect benefits ~~ age required to be eligible to collect benefits ~~ if the plan will meet your needs/lifestyle after retirement
Take the time and schedule an appointment with your employerˇs * benefits person * and discuss YOUR retirement plan. Ask them about YOUR Statement Of Accrued Benefits (SAB). This is YOUR personal account and will tell you the benefits you can expect based on your salary and retirement time.
If youˇre self-employed, as many of us are, you need to establish your own retirement plan. The easiest plan is an IRA at which you can only contribute $2,000 yearly. If youˇre young (years away from retirement) check out a non-deductible Roth IRA. Other plans include SIMPLE, SEP-IRA, and Keogh Plan. If you want to learn more about these plans, check our Reviews section near the end of the newsletter.
Please donˇt think you can live on Social Security (in the USA) alone! If you have no idea what you MIGHT have already accumulated into Social Security, FIND OUT! (Link for SSA in Reviews section)
WARNING and a TIP: Just when you thought you were covered! One thing that can zap you financially is a divorce (I hope this never happens to you) and your pension plan could be one of your largest assets to be DIVIDED up (Iˇve seen this happen). SO, if youˇre married, I sincerely hope you stay so happily and forever after!

Does Your Life Include a RIPE Plan?Planning Tips for Retirement, Investing, Protection, and Estate Planning Part 2 (Investing) by: Janet L. Hall
After reviewing your retirement plan, or lack of one, you might have had a huge eye opener to the type of life you might have to endure after retirement. Did it become apparent that you HAVE to change your lifestyle NOW so you can enjoy your future? Did it become apparent that you better start learning about investing and start investing NOW?
TIP: Before you begin to invest you should also educate yourself into the vast arena of investing. You should have a game plan, know what your expectations are for investing, and your needs for now and the future.
The Internet has made it easier then every to start investing; at least you can sit in the privacy of your home or office and click away your money. BUT are you investing wisely? OR does the whole idea of investing have you so confused or scared that you donˇt even think about it?
Let me tell you right up front, there are no PERFECT investments. Very few people (if any) get rich overnight by investing. Investing is more like a long-term savings plan, but hopefully with much better returns.
To make intelligent and wise investments, you should know and understand the economic conditions; not only of the US or country you live in, BUT the world economy as a whole. Stop, learn, and understand how inflation, interest rates, and taxes will affect your investments.
Once you have some understanding of economics and how it will affect your investments then you need to know and understand the different types of investment opportunities that are available and how your age and possibly even your health plays into those investments.
The 5 Wˇs of Investing:
~~ WHO do I use as my broker or do I go at it alone? You can do most of your investing yourself but if you need or want advice, hire a planner or broker; you DO NOT have to be rich to hire a planner. Just remember, bottom line, itˇs your money, not theirs, and itˇs your life!
~~ WHAT type of investments should I make? A lot of things come into play here your age, income, available monies, your health, and your expectations. Iˇve listed several types of investments for you. Itˇs your job to find out which is best suited for you.
Types of Investments:
For a small amount of money you can invest in many stocks by investing in MUTUAL FUNDS.
Under Mutual Funds you have: Growth Funds, Income Funds, Bond Funds, Money Market Funds, Sector Funds, International Funds.
There are * open-ended * and * closed-ended * funds, * fund families *, and * big * funds and * small * funds (Isnˇt this FUN!).
INDIVIDUAL STOCKS are publicly traded stocks that are over-the-counter and listed.
Under Stocks you have: Common Stock, Preferred Stock, Cumulative Preferred, Stock Dividends, and Penny Stock.
IOU a BOND, which is what a bond is.
Under Bonds you have: T-Bonds, T-Bills, Savings Bonds, Municipal Bonds, Corporate Bonds, and Stripped Bonds.
You can also invest in Real Estate, Art, Collectibles, Utilities, and Commodities.
There are Low Risk/Low Effort and High Effort, Medium Risk/Low Effort and High Effort, and High Risk/Low Effort and High Effort
~~ WHEN do I start investing? If youˇve been doing your homework the last couple of months in OverHall IT! You should have a working budget in place, cut out needless or wasteful spending, and your financial area should be more in balance. The next suggested step before you begin investing is to build an emergency fund of three to six monthsˇ salary. After all these tasks are completed, then and ONLY then should you think about investing.
TIP: You should only invest money that you can afford to * put away * for at least five years or longer. This means you must take a very close look at other things in your life, such as is your job secure, is your transportation reliable, are you in good health, is your business profitable and steady, and many, many other areas and things in your life before you start investing your hard earned money, because you want to make a profit, right?
~~ WHERE do I invest? Only you can answer this AFTER youˇve done your homework!
~~ WHY do I want or need to invest? Do you want to build an estate to leave to your loved ones or do you need extra money now? Are you investing to supplement your income or for your childˇs future?
~~ HOW do I invest? Invest the time in learning about investing your money, itˇs your MONEY and your FUTURE. If youˇve already started investing, schedule a meeting with yourself or planner/broker and review your portfolio to make certain your investments are or will be meeting your needs. Make it a habit to review your portfolio at least yearly and especially when you have a * life * change.
As you can see, there is a lot more to investing then just * picking something * and laying out your hard earned cash!
How much time are you willing to invest in your investments?
The mantra for Investing is * Educate, Select, Monitor, and Review *!
TIP: Try playing * pretend investing * while you are learning. E-TRADE offers a * PLAY * area to do such a thing at http://www.etrade.virtualstockexchange.com
Hereˇs hoping you invest wisely and make the monies that you need or want!

Does Your Life Include a RIPE Plan?Planning Tips for Retirement, Investing, Protection, and Estate Planning Part 3 (Protection) by: Janet L. Hall
Protection Planning What IF?
What if something should happen to you, a family member, or one of your costly possessions? Are they protected?
Just like your computer should have protection against * viruses *, your assets, family, and self also need to be protected.
First, letˇs look at some assets that might need protection:
~~ HOME If you are buying a home, you are usually required to have homeowners insurance, and depending on what area of the country you live in, you might need additional insurance protection, such as for natural disasters: hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, flooding, and just regular old storms!
If you are renting a home, apartment, townhouse, or condo, it is also a good idea to look into renters insurance to protect your belongings.
~~ AUTO If you have an auto, you are probably required by law, depending on where you live, to have auto insurance. If the car is still being paid for (you have a loan against the car) you have to have full coverage, which is more costly.
~~ EQUIPMENT If youˇre a business owner, youˇll need to protect all your company assets, and if you rely on your computer to make a living, get some protection for it ASAP!
You can get protection * in case of death * that will pay off your home, auto, and some other bills.
You can get protection * in case of disability * that will help you pay your bills while disabled.
Today, make a list of all the assets in your life that are protected, and review the coverage you already have to make sure it meets your needs.
Make a list of all the assets in your life that ARENˇT protected, and find out what kind of protection is available, the cost, and if there is a real need to protect them.
And donˇt forget if you use your hands, such as a pianist, or your voice; such as a singer to make a living, these too are assets that need to be protected!
Second, letˇs take a look at some of the protection you and your family might need, such as life insurance.
NOTE: Iˇm going to skip over Health Insurance because I wrote about that in the March issue (see Puzzled by Your Insurance Coverage? Letˇs OverHall the Pieces! At http://www.overhall.com/mar00.htm ). If youˇre new to OverHall IT! or have forgotten about this, I urge you to read and review this article.
Life Insurance can provide you and your family with financial security as protection or as an investment.
The purpose of life insurance is to fill the gap between Social Security, Investment Income, and any other sources of income your family might receive, and THEIR needs after you leave this World.
So, how much insurance will you need to replace your income, and to take care of your families needs?
If youˇve been doing the OverHall IT! exercises for the past six months, youˇve got a head start on evaluating these needs.
According to life-line.org, ¨While thereˇs no substitute for evaluating needs, one rule of thumb is to buy life insurance equivalent to five to seven times your annual gross income.〃
Life-line.org has a needs calculator that can help you with your evaluation, but basically you need to gather up your financial information and sit down and play the * what if * game.
NOTE: I realize that this subject matter might be too hard for many of you to think about, talk about, or even plan for, BUT it is a VITAL part of OverHalling and bringing Balance to the financial area of your life. True, many of us think * that will never happen to me *, or think youˇll stay healthy and young forever; sadly, this is not the case for ANY of us. Everyone must leave this World at some time, we just hope itˇs later then sooner. With that said, letˇs continue.
First look at what kind of anticipated illness expenses and funeral expenses your loved ones will need to make IMMEDIATELY. What is the cost today? Ten years from now? At the age of 75 or 85? Total that.
Remember, you are playing the * what if * game and you need to cover all bases, so to speak.
Next, add to that your total monthly family budget; this should be slightly less now that you are gone. Do this as above: budget today, ten years, different ages, different scenarios.
Next write down any income your family might receive from any of the following:
~~ Your assets (savings, stocks, real estate investments, etc) ~~ Social Security Benefits ~~ Survivors Benefits from your pension plan ~~ Your spouseˇs salary and/or pension ~~ Other sources
Total these items and you have total income available without life insurance.
Now you need to subtract the total income your family receives from income required (your monthly budget expenses).
Write down the number of years income is required (spouseˇs life expectancy).
Next multiply your required income by 12 and by the number of years for your spouseˇs life expectancy.
Subtract the amount of insurance you already have. Add in the last illness and funeral expenses.
Your total will be an approximate of how much life insurance should be maintained.
Please remember, as your lifestyle changes, your insurance needs might change.
This is a lot of work, I know, but isnˇt your family worth it?
Now what if you donˇt have a family, children, or anyone that relies on your income? Then you probably donˇt need life insurance, unless you want to be a nice relative or friend and leave some money to others in your life <g>.
Do you need to buy life insurance for your children? I say no, unless your child is a movie star or bringing in income that the family relies on. However, you can get life insurance for children that you would use as an investment for future expenses, such as a college.
Do your homework first, and then youˇre ready to go and have a serious talk with your insurance representative.
All this insurance, protection, and coverage can become very costly, being prepared and KNOWING what you WANT and NEED will aid you in making the correct decisions.
Remember, this is YOUR life, and your families, please take care of both, now, before a * what if * really happens to you.
TIP: Donˇt forget to look at the need you might have for Long Term Insurance.
NOTE: Sometimes, and some people look at Asset Protection Planning as a way to avoid future lawsuits, financial privacy, reduce liability insurance costs, and a way to save on income and estate taxes. Does Your Life Include a RIPE Plan?Planning Tips for Retirement, Investing, Protection, and Estate Planning Part 4 (Estate) by: Janet L. Hall
As a little girl, I grew up in Palm Beach County, FL, not in the rich, elite section, but in the very small town of Palm Springs. I recall very clearly taking drives along Ocean Blvd. into the town of Palm Beach while relatives and friends pointed out, ooded and aahed the various estates and mansions. And so I grew up believing an estate was something ONLY the rich owned. It wasnˇt until recently, four years ago to be exact, that someone started talking to me about estate planning, pointing out to me why and how they were implementing their plan. I looked a this person and said, very innocently, ¨I know you own two houses, but you donˇt own a mansion! Why would you need to do such a thing?〃 My eyes and my mind were awakened to something I would NEVER have thought of looking into until that day.
Maybe you have thought the same as I did, Estate Planning is for the rich and famous. NOT TRUE! Everyone needs to do estate planning, because let me tell you something, the state in which you live, the federal government, and the IRS have plans already in place for how to distribute and tax your stuff! Iˇm talking about your property, possessions, and even your children. (For those that live outside the US, please check with your local government and attorney for their plans for your stuff!)
By you not taking the time to plan for what happens to your stuff, your family and heirs only gain more suffering and heartache after youˇre gone. You need to take control of your stuff NOW! Do you know the repercussions your family and heirs might have to endure if you havenˇt planned? The anguish, inconvenience, and possible financial burdens they might have to face because you didnˇt plan?
Yes, Estate Planning takes time and effort. It can be emotional and trying. BUT you will be able to leave this world (or if you become incapacitated) knowing you did the best for your family and heirs. That they will be able to celebrate your life or mourn your departure without the legal and financial hassles if you have planned.
Can you imagine the state deciding who should care for your children? Can you imagine your family trying to scrap together money to keep the place theyˇve called home? Can you imagine your business being sold off, leaving your family without income?
One aspect of Estate Planning is to allow you to take advantage of gift and trust laws so that you may be able to pass on more of your assets tax-free to your family and heirs. You arenˇt cheating the government; youˇre cheating your loved ones if you donˇt plan!
Another aspect of Estate Planning is to give control to someone you trust if you should become incapacitated.
As of this year, 2000, the Estate tax-exemption level is currently $675,000; however, this is said to be increasing yearly.
Why do Estate Planning? ~~ To distribute your assets ~~ To eliminate or reduce federal estate tax ~~ To avoid unnecessary high costs in legal fees and taxes to your heirs ~~ To pass on tax-free the maximum allowed assets (these figures seem to be changing yearly) ~~ To make sure things get handled the way YOU want them to be handled
What is taxable? Many of the items that are taxable can include: Life Insurance, IRA and other Retirement benefits, Investments, Bank Accounts, Personal Property, Collectibles, your business, your home, and other real estate.
What do I need? Some of the things you will want to look into are: ~~ Durable Powers of Attorney this document transfers authority to another TRUSTED person to manage your finances. ~~ Health Care Powers of Attorney this document gives someone legal authority to act on your behalf with regard to your health care. ~~ Living Will this document will provide instructions as to the type of medical treatment that you prefer. ~~ Will a document in which you can name an executor to oversee the settlement of your estate, outline what and how you want your assets and property distributed, and name a guardian to care for your children. However, after much research, I urge you to look into a REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST with Power of Attorney. Unlike having a will or no will, you skip probate, itˇs more flexible, you have maximum control, and you maintain privacy.
Estate Planning can cover, but not limited to, wills, trusts, insurance, estate taxes, gifts, gift taxes, and income.
You will need to form a team of reliable, dependable, and competent people in the following areas: ~~ Estate Planning Attorney ~~ Life Insurance Underwriter ~~ CPA ~~ Development Officer ~~ Financial Planner ~~ Captain-This is YOU. You are the Captain of the team; itˇs what YOU want to be done, your wishes. Your team is there to help you make the best choices for your life and your families.
TIP: Your parentˇs plan may affect your plan! If you donˇt know what they have planned, then discussing this with them might be the most difficult thing youˇll have to do in estate planning. Many older parents downright refuse to talk to their children about such matters. Talking of such things can conjure up in their minds that youˇre after their money, that itˇs none of your business, youˇll find out when weˇre gone. Speak to them calmly and clearly and let them know what YOU are trying to do, that you are taking control of YOUR finances, that you are getting all your ducks in a row and how THEIR ducks might affect yours. Share your plan with them and show them what you are trying to accomplish. Hopefully if they have a plan, they will share with you, and if they don'ˇ have a plan, maybe they will learn something from you and get one of their own.
RELOCATION TIP: Property transfer laws differ from state to state. Review your estate plan when you move or retire to a different location.
Birth, death, marriage, divorce, inheritance, purchase or sale of assets are many reasons you should review your plan when you have these or other lifestyle changes. If you donˇt have any changes, a review of every three to five years is advisable.
