I’m the proud mother of a two-year old girl. She challenges my organizing abilities, my composure and my general juggling skills everyday. But overall, life with a two-year-old is the same as my life without a child: a little chaos, a little structure, and a whole lot of flexibility. Does this sound like a contradiction for a professional organizer?!

New clients or first-time seminar attendees are often surprised when they hear me talk about “moderation in organizing.” Don’t get me wrong—I have some clients whose lives need much more structure and organization! But I’ve found that the majority of them just need a little help, a few good pointers, and the ability to relax a little. Sometimes the most stress comes from being too structured and too inflexible.

In a world where perfect bodies, beautiful homes and spotless garages are the “norms” on TV, in magazines, and in our own fantasy worlds, we often forget that a little chaos is good for the soul. There are benefits to letting the cleaning slip a little so that you can spend extra time with the kids. And it’s not a sin to let the yard work wait a while in the spring so you can take a walk or finish that book. Part of being truly organized is having the ability to jump at life’s opportunities and take the time to take care of your soul. A little spontaneity is easy when you know where everything is.

In Organizing from the Inside Out, Julie Morgenstern defines being organized as “a process by which we create environments that enable us to live, work, and relax exactly as we want to.” She goes on to say, “When we are organized, our homes, offices, and schedules reflect and encourage who we are, what we want and where we’re going.” Being organized is a tool that helps us get what we want—it’s not about being perfect.

Perfectionism is an unrealistic goal that increases stress—and the whole idea of being organized is to reduce your stress level! Be organized so that you don’t waste time, money, energy or space—but don’t sweat the small stuff.

As tax season creeps up on us in 2001, make sure you have a plan for doing your taxes. Gather your records in advance. Break down this nasty annual job into small, realistic steps. Set up a clean workplace where you won’t be interrupted, and schedule your “steps” so you’ll be done at least a week in advance of your deadline. And when you’re done, celebrate—in moderation, of course!
